Family Law Divorce Custody Appellate Practice ABOUT ALEX Mr. Potruch has been admitted to the Bar of the State of New York for forty-five (45) years, and is also admitted to practice before the Federal Courts, including the Second Circuit Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court of the United States. He is a member of the New York State Bar Association, Queens County Bar Association, the Nassau County Bar Association, Trial Lawyers Association, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers since 1982, and is a former Chairman of the Continuing Legal Education Committees. He is also a former Chairman of the Appellate Practice Committee of the Queens County Bar Association, and former Chairman of the Appellate Practice Committee of the Nassau and Queens County Bar Associations, Family Law Section. He has specialized in litigation in the field of matrimonial law and appellate practice and has lectured on those subjects before the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, New York State Bar Association, and Nassau County Bar Association, and at colleges and law schools, and co-authored a pamphlet on appellate practice and matrimonial matters. He has appeared in oral argument in the Court of Appeals on three (3) cases in matrimonial actions and several other times in non-matrimonial appeals. His most recent Court of Appeals argument was in Frankel v. Frankel, 2 N.Y.3d 601, 814 N.E.2d 37, which is the leading case involving the awarding of counsel fees in matrimonial actions, as well as other Court of Appeals cases dating back to 1977. Mr. Potruch has participated in over 100 appeals in the Appellate Division, First and Second Departments and the Court of Appeals including a number of significant matters involving matrimonial law. Mr. Potruch has tried over forty (40) cases in custody matters to conclusion and has also been retained on numerous occasions solely for the purpose of cross-examining forensic experts and mental-health professionals. Mr. Potruch was the former law secretary to Mr. Justice Daniel E. Fitzpatrick, Supreme Court, Queens County, from 1972 to late 1973, and thereafter served as law secretary to Mr. Justice Charles Margett when he served as the Administrative Judge. In addition, Mr. Potruch was former counsel to the New York State Assembly Sub-Committee on Estate and Gift Taxation, counsel to the New York State Assembly Sub-Committee on the New York State Constitution and the Civil Practice Law and Rules, and the Joint Legislative Commission on Efficiency and Economy in Government. As a practicing lawyer specializing in matrimonial and appellate law, he lectures frequently on family law, matrimonial matters, and appellate matters at various bar associations, lawyer associations, and lay groups and in various law schools. In addition, Mr. Potruch was the author of a yearly article on "Maintenance and Child Support", appearing in the Annual Survey of Matrimonial Law published by the American Academy.
