Welcome to J. Holtz Furniture I specialize in building custom furniture and built-in cabinetry, including the occasional kitchen. I also build doors and architectural millwork, as well as the prototype for other companies. I build each order one at a time, using hand selected hardwoods, locally sourced whenever possible. I finish each piece with a sensual, hand rubbed finish. I draw influence from a variety of woodworking traditions, including Shaker, Scandinavian, Mid Century Modern, and Asian. All of these cultures share a respect for craft and simplicity, as do I. I am a third generation craftsman. I began pursuing my interest in furniture design and construction while studying pre-architecture at the University of Minnesota. I ended up in the wood shop in Design class, and soon after, quit school to embrace a different path of education as a woodworker’s apprentice. After spending three years as an apprentice with chair maker Jeff Miller in Chicago, I went to work at high-end furniture shops doing both production and custom work. At the same time, I was building a client base doing custom furniture in my own shop. I have been building custom furniture professionally since 1998. I also like to share my experience by teaching woodworking classes. I have also built and written as a contributor to American Woodworker Magazine. After spending three years in the scenic St. Croix River Valley, J. Holtz Furniture relocated to Minneapolis/St. Paul. I now work in a co-op shop with several other furniture makers. My work has been exhibited in juried shows with the Chicago Furniture Designers Association, the Minnesota Woodworkers Guild, and The Art of Fine Furniture at the History Center in Winona, MN. My work has been featured in The Chicago Tribune, Fine Woodworking Magazine, and FDMC Magazine. I was a member of Xylos Gallery in Minneapolis for many years before it closed. J. Holtz Furniture specializes in working with customers to create unique pieces of furniture. I find the commission process enjoyable, as do most of my customers. There is an initial consultation where we discuss ideas, function, and general aesthetics. Next, I present several sketches and get a sense of which direction to proceed. I then refine the idea and do scale drawings and give a quote. If things are agreeable I collect a deposit and put the job on the schedule. Please give me a call or email to discuss your ideas. 612-432-2765 [email protected]
